Become a certified art teacher

Are you gifted with artistic abilities such as painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics or more? Do you enjoy working with children and sharing your knowledge with others? You should consider becoming an art teacher in public or private schools.

SBU offers an art education degree program that will equip you to become certified to teach art at all grade levels K-12. You will be exposed to a variety of art mediums and hone your artistic talents while also learning the foundations of teaching philosophies.

This degree is offered through SBU's Geneva Casebolt College of Arts and Social Sciences.

Faith Integration

SBU's Art program is intentional about the integration of Christian faith and academic discipline. You will learn how faith influences how we see the world and how art provides a platform by which we can communicate our faith and worldview. Faith discussions are woven into course material for all art education degree programs. For example, art history courses examine the impact of Christian history on famous and influential art pieces.

Additionally, you will learn how you can use your God-given artistic abilities to make a difference. At SBU, you will have the opportunity to incorporate art with missions and will be challenged to consider how faith influences art. With faith integrated into your education, becoming an art teacher at SBU will mean so much more!

Driskill Art Gallery

The University Gallery provides students with hands-on opportunities in curating exhibits, hanging shows and displaying their own work. Additionally, the Driskill Art Gallery hosts regional artists throughout each academic year.

Student Missouri State Teachers Association

As an art education major, you are encouraged to join SBU's chapter of Student Missouri State Teachers Association (SMSTA) to benefit from professional development and networking opportunities as you prepare for your future teaching career.

Scholarships

You may submit an art portfolio to apply for an art performance scholarship.

Additionally, there are several privately funded art scholarships for which you may apply, including the Dunnegan Scholarship and the Earl & Gloria Shell and Sharon Shell Garrison Scholarship.
